DARPA Hyper-Realistic Training

Strategic Operations and VRMC provided facilities, support, significant military equipment (SME), and personnel for an exercise and demonstration for 35 members of the DARPA Palm Pilot Group in February 2005.
Squad-sized military units conducted urban training exercises in round robin fashion at Strategic Operations Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT) facilities and Tactical Training Lab. Training scenarios included urban patrolling, Role I combat trauma care in the battalion aid station, and improvised explosive devices (IED) awareness and detection.
Role players simulated indigenous populations. Other role players simulated the opposing force (OPFOR), with appropriate dress, and equipped with AK-47 assault rifles capable of firing blanks, rocket-propelled grenade launchers (RPG7s) with special effects rockets, and complete movie-style pyrotechnical special effects that simulated RPGs, IEDs, and other explosions. Movie-style wound makeup special effects simulated combat casualties.
Participants experienced how various devices serving command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and medical care functions are employed under realistic, stressful combat conditions. The scenarios were videotaped, and a DVD was produced for participants.
